How did you all spend Christmas and New Year Holiday??
こんにちは！デビッドです。
クリスマスとお正月のホリディはみんなどんな風に過ごしましたか？
I had a adventure as usual!
I and my wife went to Hiruzen Highland in Okayama Prefecture .
私はいつものように冒険してきました！
私と妻は岡山県の蒜山高原に行きました。
When we set off it was already late afternoon, but the weather forecast was fine.
So I drove to Okayama, but on high way towards Hiruzen, there was a warning saying if you don’t have snow chain or winter tires, you cannot drive on highway.
出発したのはもう午後の遅い時間でしたが天気予報は晴れでした。
それで岡山に車で向かったのですが蒜山高原に向かう途中の高速道路で
冬タイヤかチェーンがない車は通れませんと警告が出たのです。
At that time, there was still no snow at all on the road, and it was only 17 kilos to our hotel, so I thought we would be fine.
その時点で道路に全く雪はなかったし、ホテルまでほんの１７キロでした。
それで大丈夫だと思ったのです。
But my wife was not happy. She wanted to turn around .
I have driven in a heavy snow in Scotland or many other places. So I was confident in my driving skill. But she wasn’t.
妻はそうではありませんでした。引き返そうと言うのです。
私は過去にスコットランドや他の土地でも大雪の中を運転したことはあるので自信がありましたが妻は知らなかったのですね。
As we drove further it started to snow very heavily, and the road was completely covered by snow. But it was less than 10 kilos to the hotel. So I kept driving but my wife was complaining in the passenger seat.
少し進むと雪が激しくなり道路は真っ白になりました。あともう10キロもないので私は進み続けましたが、妻は助手席で怒っていました。
Even after we finally managed to get to the hotel safely, she was stressed and angry.
That is when I received a message from my friend John in Canada. He was telling me that because of very heavy snow in Canada, a flight to Miami was canceled and they had to give up their holiday to Miami. So he DROVE to Miami, 5000 kilos altogether!
ホテルに何とか辿り着いた後も妻はまだストレスで怒っていました。
ちょうどその時カナダに住んでいる友達のジョンからメッセージが来たのです。
ジョンはカナダの豪雪のせいでマイアミへの飛行機がキャンセルになってホリデイを諦めなきゃならなくなって、それでマイアミまで往復5,000キロ車を運転して行ったのだそうです！
I showed John’s message to my wife. She stopped complaining. I think she was grateful that she wasn’t married to my friend John!
それでジョンのメッセージを妻に見せました。妻はぶつぶつ言うのを止めました。彼女は私の友達のジョンと結婚していなくて良かった！と思ったに違いありません。
Life is always full of adventure!
人生はいつでも冒険がいっぱいですね！

It is getting colder every day, isn’t it? I am so excited because I love snow! I used to enjoy climbing snow mountains in the winter when I lived in England. I have also climbed Mt. Blanc in the French Alps and dug a hole in the snow to sleep overnight. It was a fantastic night!
やあ！だんだん寒くなってきましたね。私は雪が大好きなのでワクワクしてます。イギリスに住んでいる時は冬の雪山に登るのが大好きでした。アルプス山脈のモンブランに登頂して雪に穴を掘って一晩寝たこともあります。楽しかったなあ。
Because I lived in Borneo Island for 11 years before I moved to Japan, I missed snow so much.
(It is very hot on Borneo Island all year around!)
日本に来る前はボルネオ島に11年住んでいたので雪が恋しかったです。
（ボルネオ島は一年中とても暑いんです）
Last year, I set off to Gifu on my motorbike on the Christmas day to see my friend. It was forecasted for heavy snow. It started to snow when I set off from Hiroshima around noon. It got heavier and heavier as I approached Kyoto, finally I had to get off the toll road at Hikone I.C. due to deep snow on the road. It was late at night, I tried to find a hotel to stay for a night, but could not find any. They were all full.
去年クリスマスの日に私は岐阜の友達に会いにバイクで出かけました。大雪の予報が出ていました。広島をお昼くらいに出た時にはもう雪が降り始めていました。京都に近づくにつれてどんどん雪がひどくなり積雪のために高速が閉鎖された為とうとう彦根ICで高速を降りなければならなくなりました。
もう夜も遅く私は一晩泊まれるホテルを探しましたが、どこもいっぱいでした。
I decided to stay in a little bus stop shelter by the toll gate. Luckily, I had my sleeping bag with me. So, I was quite comfortable with a few cans of beer! Luckily, I found a 7 Eleven that was still open
それで高速料金所の側のバス停留所の小さな小屋に寝ることにしました。ラッキーにも寝袋を持っていたし、更にラッキーなことに近くにセブンイレブンを見つけたのでビールも手に入りかなり快適に過ごせました。
In the morning a very kind old lady came to the shelter with a hot green tea. I think she was very worried about a Gaijin who was sleeping int the bus stop shelter in the deep snow!
朝になったら親切なお婆さんが熱いお茶を持ってきてくれました。多分大雪の中でバス停の小屋に寝ている外国人のことを心配してくれたんですね。
That morning, I traveled to Gifu where the snow was even deeper! I almost had to push my motorbike to get to my friend’s old school hostel.
それから再び岐阜に向かいましたが雪は更に深くなっていました！友達のいる廃校を改装したホステルまで最後はバイクを押して行きました。
I came back to Hiroshima on 31st December. It took me more than 11 hours, riding my motor bike in the heavy snow. It was freezing!
広島には大晦日に戻ってきましたが、この日も大雪で11時間かかりました。大雪の中のバイクは凍りつきそうでした！！
I don’t have any plan for this winter holiday yet. But I am looking forward to seeing snow again. I love Japanese winter mountains!
I will tell you all about my next adventure very soon.
今年の冬の冒険計画はまだありませんが、今年も雪が降るといいなあとワクワクしています。日本の雪山が大好き！次の冒険のお話はまた！

Hi!I’m David. I’m from Yorkshire in England.
I have taught English as a second language for 20 years.
And I have started to teach at One World International House in Saijo.
My passion of life is traveling and adventures.
I love cycling, mountaineering, diving and traveling.
So I would like to talk about my adventures on this blog.
When I was a child, my father used to take me and my three brothers to adventure.
He used to put all his camping equipments in his car( even a boat!! on the roof of his car)and go to Wales, Lake District for camping.
We used to enjoy fishing, walking.
Do you know Lake District and Wales in England?
They are both famous for beautiful mountains. Lake District is also for beautiful lakes, too. Lake District is very popular among Japanese tourists for Peter Rabbit books.
My first camping trip without my father was when I was 14years old.
I cycled for about 170km with my friend, from Yorkshire to The Lake District.
When I look back I can’t believe how brave my parents were to send me out to such an adventure. I camped , slept in a little tent with my friend for 14 nights.
As we are cycling home, one of the tyre got an puncture. I had to call my father and he came to rescue us. I still remember how much we were relieved!
So this was my first adventure . Many more stories to come!

私は20年近く英語を第二言語として教えてきました。
そして西条のワンワールドインターナショナルハウスで教え始めたばかりです。
私が大好きなのは旅行と冒険です。サイクリングと山登りとダイビングも大好きです。
このブログでは私の冒険の話をしようと思います。
小さい頃はお父さんが私と3人の弟を冒険に連れて行ってくれました。
キャンプ道具を車いっぱいに載せて(車のてっぺんにはボートまで載せて！)ウェールズや湖水地方にキャンプに行きました。魚釣りやハイキングを楽しんだものです。
イギリスのウェールズと湖水地方を知っていますか？
どちらも美しい山々で有名です。湖水地方はたくさんの美しい湖でも有名です。また湖水地方はピーターラビットの本でよく知られ日本人観光客にもとても人気ですね。
私がお父さんなしで初めてキャンプに行ったたのは14歳の時です。友達と2人でヨークシャーから湖水地方に約160キロをサイクリングしました。今考えると両親がそんな冒険を許してくれたなんて勇気があったなあと感心します。私は友達と一緒にキャンプして小さなテントに14 泊しました。
帰り道で自転車のタイヤがパンクしてお父さんに迎えに来てもらった時には心強かったなあ！
これが私の最初の冒険の話。これからどんどん冒険は続きますので乞うご期待！
